	Klango Player,
	the accessible multimedia center
	-------------------------------------

The Klango Player is undoubtedly a unique piece of software, not only for its users but also for its authors. The program was developed for and by users. At the very intensive, early stage of developement the program was tested and commented by over 120 people, who in large majority are blind. A year of work and almost three thousands hours of testing and three thousands forum posts gave a great effect.

The Klango Player is one of a kind in the way it uses and combines an aural interaction, sound, speech synthesis, media, internet, social functions and more.

Discover unique features of Klango Player and spread the word! :)

Please note that this is the main (and only) informational text delivered together with the Klango Player and if you are executing Klango Player for the very first time, you don't have to read this file right now. This text is always available in the 'Help' menu in the Player and as a text file on the Windows Desktop and in the Start Menu.
Feel free to press Escape and enter the program. The best way for you to familiarize with it is simply to explore it by yourself.
However, if you want to read the file right now then here you go...

	Section 1. The background.

The Klango Player is dedicated for people who like or have to listen to the computer programs. We made such assumption from the beginning of work on the Player.

In other words: it means that you even don't have to own a screen monitor at all to use the program! If you are a sighted person, you have an opportunity to turn the monitor off and try to rely on your hearing only -- it's painless and learning experience. Try it and don't give up too early! :)

Section 2. (The lack of) requirements.

The main consequence of the above assumption and in turn the only requirement is that you have to have a speech synthesiser. Without a synthesiser an aural interaction would be very limited. Any way, having a speech synthesiser it's not a problem these days. All popular versions of Windows Operating System include one or more voices. Dig the internet and you'll find a lot more of them.
Klango Player supports SAPI 5 and SAPI 4 compilant synthesisers.

Something more? No, but of course, without a sound card installed you wouldn't hear much. ;)

An important information here is that you also don't have to run a screen-reader software at all to use the Klango Player. The program is totally self-voicing.

	To summarize the above:
	* if you own a moderately modern computer running under Windows 2000, XP or later there should be no problems with running the program.
	* Klango Player uses synthesisers in SAPI 4 and SAPI 5 formats.
	* Screen-reader software is not required.

Section 3. Setup, updates and running of Klango Player.

You can download the Player from http://setup.klango.net. Under this address you'll always find the newest, most current version of the program.

The Setup process is a standard procedure. You just select a folder where you wish to install the program. There is a possibility to install it on a mobile device -- if you're interested, please read the "Klango Player on a pendrive" section.

The setup creates a "Klango Player" folder on the Windows Desktop and in the Start Menu. There are two icons besides other in it: "Klango Player" and "Klango Player DX mode". The first icon launches the Player with the OpenAL sound card drivers, in the second case program will use Windows' DirectX divers. The difference matters when you are encountering problems with running the Player. In such case try both icons -- one of them should work. Please read then also the "Known hardware and software issues" section below.

In most cases one has to download the installation package only once - further updates will be annouced automatically by the Klango Player itself. Your role is then only to enter the "Programs" menu and launch the update process.

The Player is a self-voicing program but it has been tested (mostly by users) for compatibility with Jaws and Window-Eyes screen-readers. We have put a lot of effort in ensuring that our Player and these programs will work well together at the same time. The Thunder and NVDA screen-readers haven't been tested yet, but it's a matter of time. Maybe you can do some tests?

The last thing worth noting here in this section is that SAPI 4 synthesisers present limited functionality in the Klango Player. It's not possible to place their voices in three dimensional aural space which is a very interesting feature of our program. Although not all SAPI 4 synthesisers have problems with 3D aural space, we decided to turn this functionality off for all of them.

In case you couldn't execute the Klango Player, please write to us with the online form at the website http://support.klango.net.

	To summarize the section:
	* To download the Player, point your web browser to http://setup.klango.net.
	* Further updates will be announced by the program itself and your role is only to start the update process by using the "Programs" menu.
	* Test the Player with different soundcard drivers by clicking different icons on the desktop.
	* Klango Player should work fine when screen-reader is turned on.
	* SAPI 4 voices don't work in 3D aural space of the Klango Player. SAPI 5 voices are OK.
	* In case of problems with executing the Player, visit the http://support.klango.net website.

Section 4. Klango Accounts. Classroom-ready software.

After the program starts, you are presented the Startup Menu where you have to sign in. The Startup Menu of the Klango Player is the ONLY place where you can create a Klango Account. Although one can login as a Guest (by pressing Enter in login dialog), it's highly recommended to create one's own account to gain a full access to all functions of the Player.
The process of creating a new account is very simple - just think out and enter a nickname and password.
Having an account is free, secure and allows you to fully participate in the community of Klango.

Klango Player was designed to run also on a public access computers, for example in classrooms. For each user who works with the particular installation of the Klango Player, a new subfolder is created in the "profiles" folder. No significant user data is stored there, just things one records from the network and configuration data for the Player and Programs. This subfolder may be deleted at any time: for example if you're not going to use Klango on this computer again. To do that, just use the "Klango Network/My profile" menu.

If you are the only user of a computer, then constant signing-in may be tedious. We have the cure: after the second login you have an opportunity to turn on the automatic login function. With the autologin turned on you in fact stop thinking about any accounts in the Klango Player.

There is one exception to the above: it's recommended that you edit your "visiting card" and, if you wish, other user's profile data. The visiting card, a piece of text you may write about yourself lets other people to get to know you better ...if you wish of course. You can edit your profile (including the visiting card) in the "Klango Network/My profile" menu in the Player.

Let's sum up the accounts stuff:
	* One can create Klango Accounts in the Setup Menu of the Player.
	* Klango is classroom-ready -- it feels good in a multiuser enviroment.
	* There is an autologin function which makes the life easier.
	* Editing a "visiting card" in your profile data is cruical for people to get to know you better.

Section 5. Klango Player and the Klango.Net website.

Ah yes, the Klango Network. Some functions of the Klango Player are also available from the Klango.Net website. The site is currently in its early stage of construction, but you can log in to your Klango Account (created with Klango Player of course) and get access to the forum or your private messages. It's a handful way to stay in contact with people despite where you are or whether you've got your Klango pendrive with you or not.
The Klango.Net website will be soon drastically improved. Stay tuned.
Let's get back to the Klango Player program.

	...but remember that:
	* the Klango.Net website gives you an access to the some of the functions of the Player.

Section 6. User Interface of the Klango Player -- first audio, then video.

If you've read the this document from its beginning then you already know what is the main assumption behind the Klango Player. In short: an aural presenation of the program is for us far more important than its visuals. In other words: first audio, then video. It's up to you to judge the effectiveness of our approach to the user interface -- in this section we concentrate ourselves rather at the basics of interaction in the Player.

The majority of the program's functions is reachable from an always available menu. The menu is context-sensitive, which means that it changes its contents depending on the current position in the program. You enter the menu by pressing the (left) Alt key, jump between options with arrow keys and select one of them with the Enter key or exit the menu by pressing Escape. It's the most common scheme of interaction in the Klango.
The second always available element of the interface is a help. To enter the help one have to press the F1 key. The help, like the menu, is context-sensitive too and contains information about functions and keyboard shortcuts available in the particular place in the program. There are some functions available only through shortcuts, for example controlling the speed of media playback.
Third thing that is constant through the whole program is the Escape key which always works the same - it closes the current interactive element and at the top level it closes currently opened media and the program itself.

Of course, there are more interactive elements. They appear temporarely only -- they pop up and after use, they disapear. Such elements are left-right choices, up-down collections, trees, text edit elements, forms, file dialogs and so on. When poped up, they pushes its own menu and help "on top" the Alt and F1 keys. Each of them may be closed with Escape and when closed they pop its menu and help from the keys.

All elements of the interface have their own aural representation. Audio samples are played for various interaction events. A complete "audio theme" for the Klango Player constists of more than 50 sound files. Only one, the default theme is included in the base installation package. More themes can, however, be downloaded and installed directly from the "Settings/Audio theme" menu. If you've got an idea for a new theme and some time to create it, please refer to the "Custom Audio Themes" section.

If it comes to visuals, the Klango Player has two interesting features.
The first is that the program uses its own graphical elements and don't rely on Windows GUI thus it looks ...different. It is a full screen application using transparent panels and colorful backgrounds. In the default setting the background is a beautiful photo of our planet. Some say that the program looks very good, some say that it looks weird ...so as you see it's a matter of taste.
Second important feature of the Klango Player's GUI is that it has three view modes which may be toggled at any time with the Shift F3 combination. These modes are: the "full" mode with the current menu, help and workspace displayed, the "workspace only" mode with only dialogs' area displayed and the mode called "only logo" where your screen is occupied only by a centered, static image. The latter view mode is unique in computer software -- if you don't need visuals then free your machine up from generating them! It's something more than just switching off the monitor, because in the "only logo" mode you gain additional computing power for the program.

In this section we've said that:
	* menu (the Alt key), help (the F1 key) and the Escape key are always available elements of the intreface.
	* Besides them there are also various types of (temporary) dialogs for performing various actions.
	* For navigation in menus and dialogs always use the arrow keys and the Enter key.
	* Some functions are available only through the keyboard shortcuts. Use the F1 key to get to know them.
	* An audio theme for the Klango Player consists of 50 sound samples which are used to for various purposes. Additional themes can be easly downloaded and installed from the "Settings" menu.
	* Klango Player has its own Graphical User Interface with three modes of operation. One of including the "logo only" mode in which your machine is freed up from generating visuals.

Section 7. The Main Menu of the Klango Player.

In short: the main menu contains the following items:

	1. Klango Network: forum, private messages, microBlog, (shared) notes, contacts, who's online and user's profile.
	2. Media: the Open Media Catalogue, playback and recording of internet media.
	3. Files: playback of local files and playlists.
	4. Programs: launching of Klango Programs and built-in install/update mechanism for them and for the Player.
	5. Settings: voice and audio theme selection and other options
	6. Help: this file, Q&A mechanism, message to the author and more.
	7. Exit: exit program and logout functions.

In the sections below we try to describe these functionalities in more detail.
We start from the second menu item.

Section 8. The Open Media Catalogue.

Besides playing files, the Klango Player can play also internet radio stations, audio books and podcasts. For you, the primary source of them is the Open Media Catalogue available in the program's menu. The catalogue contains tenths of thousands addresses grouped by attributes (tags) like region of origin, style of music or topic. There are also several special categories, for example "last added", "most popular", "last played" and so on.

The media catalogue is called "open", because all owners of Klango Accouts can participate in its editing. Everybody can add new media to the catalogue, everybody may tag them using a set of predefined categories.
There is a special group of users - the Editors, who are the only people allowed to remove tags from elements of the catalogue. To become an Editor one should show the community his or her commitment in adding new items and tags in the catalogue. The final decision (for the moment) is ours.

After adding a new element to the catalogue, it appears in the "Waiting Room" and in the categories which has been added to it. Waiting Room is a place where the Editors keep new entries until they become properly described. When an Editor removes the "Waiting Room" tags, elements become a fully-fledged citizens of the catalogue. The "Waiting Room" tag may be added at any time to mark elements which has to be reviewed by the Editors.

There are two quantities which additionally classify elements of the catalogue: number of playbacks and average users' rating. One can rate a medium by pressing control G combination on it.
Both statistics may be used to sort the view of the catalogue. You can set the sorting method by pressing control spacebar (the default sorting is alphabetical). In the same form you may set a filter narrowing the view in order to show only a certain type of elements (only podcasts, only radios, only audio books or all together) or to show elements which originate from a particular region.

In the near future the catalogue will be available also through a web browser.

	The important things to remember:
	* The Open Media Catalogue available in Klango Player contains tenths of thousands addresses grouped by various tags.
	* All users may tag media and add new entries to the catalogue.
	* The Editors play the role of order keepers, look after the "Waiting Room" and have the possibility of removing tags from media.
	* View of the Catalogue can be filtered and sorted in many ways.

Section 9. Media playback and recording features.

Klango Player plays media from the internet (the "Media" menu) and from local drives (the "Files" menu) using advanced streaming and decompression procedures.

The unique feature of the program is that the majority of the most significant playback and recording functions are available for all media types: radio stations, podcasts, audio books and files. For example:

	* (with the spacebar) you can pause and resume not only files but even live radio stations,
	* (with the R key) you can record fragments of content of all media to the mp3 files,
	* (with the right and left arrows) you can jump forward and backward in a file but also in a directly played podcast and in a stream of live radio station,
	* (with control up/down/left arrows) you can adjust the speed of playback even for podcasts and live radio stations,
	* (with the control right arrow) you can go fast forward with prelisten,
	* (with shift up/down/left arrows) you can use a "time compression" effect for all types of media.

For more info about the set of available functions, please press F1 during media playback and listen to the list of keyboard shortcuts for various functions.

The recorded fragments of media content are stored in the "klango recordings" folder available at the top level of the "Files" structure. Recordings are automatically ordered in folders which names reflect the names of media from where the recording originate.

Radio stations. The playback and functions like recording, pausing, and jumping inside the stream work similar as in modern TV sets featuring built-in hard drives. It's one of exceptional functionalities of the Klango Player. For example: you can any time go backward in the radio stream (with the left arrow), start recording (with the R key) and with the control right arrow get back quickly to the present time in the stream. This way you can record a song which has already been ended(!)

Podcats and audio books: episodes (or sections) can be played directly from the server, downloaded and saved in the "klango recordings" folder or saved directly on a mobile device selected from the poll of currently attached devices. During direct network playback all enumerated above keyboard shortcuts work without any problems.

Files and playlists: the Player can play files and playlists of various types. For example: mp3, ogg, wav, avi, mpeg, asf, flv, flac, wv (wavpack), mpc (musepack) ...and many, many more. We don't publish here a full list of supported extensions, because there is too much of them and because the Player changes constantly and often one day some extensions are not supported but the next day they are.
The default format for playlists is m3u (this format is used in saving the current playlist), but the Player supports more playlist types, for example pls or ram.
All playable files can be easily converted to the mp3 format or saved to the mobile device. Both functions are available from the menu.

By pressing control I, one can get to know more about an active medium or a file. In the case of internet media in the same place one can edit the list of tags assigned to them.

	To summarize the section:
	* Klango Player uses advanced media streaming and decompresion procedures for playing internet radio stations, podcasts, audio books and files.
	* Functions like pause, rewind, fast forward with preslisten, recording, speed adjusting and "time compression" work even for live radio stations, podcasts and audio books.
	* Recordings are stored in a ordered manner: one medium = one folder
	* Podcasts and audio books can be played directly from the network, can be downloaded to local disk or directly to a mobile device (for example to a mp3 player).
	* The Player can play all popular types of files and playlists and tenths of other formats.

Section 10. Social features - forum, private messages, shared notes and more.

The community of Klango and social features of the program are the second face of the Klango Player. The Open Media Catalogue described above is only one of such functionalities. We describe the rest of social functions below. They are designed to be first of all user friendly.

Private messages. Klango users use them to communicate with themselves. It's a fast and secure way of messaging. Arrivals of new messages are anounced aurally.

Forum (or forums to be precise). It is a place of open disscusion available for all Klango users. Each forum is divided into threads, threads contain posts.
There's one handy mechanism which can help you to be up-to-date with events on the forum. We're here talking about the "My followed threads" mechanism. You may add any thread to this pool and you can decide if you are interested in getting e-mail notifications of new replies which appear in it. "My followed threads" is the first position in the "Forum" dialog.
We are open to propositions to launch new forums. Just write to us (http://support.klango.net) and we'll see what we can do.

Shared notes. All Klango users can write their own text notes and save them on a local, their own computers. There is, however, also a possibility to save the notes on the (our) server. You could wish to do so, because for example you're working with Klango Player on different computers in different places. Depite where you're using Klango, your "server notes" are always with you ...and moreover, you can share such notes with other users. Someone can edit your note if you share it with him or her. It's a simple operation available in the "Klango Network/notes" menu.

"Who's online?" function. It brings to you a list of currently logged-in users (who don't hide themselves with the appropriate profile setting). There are some operations available to do on this list such sending a message to the selected person.

List of "My Contacts". During reading the forum posts or private messages you can add their authors to your contacts' list. Just to have their names ready at hand. If someone don't hide his or her online presence, then his/her status will be also availeble on the list.

	To sum up:
	* You can easly use the Klango Player to tighten relations in your community or to join and find yourself between other people.
	* The "social face" of the Klango Player is the user friendly mechanisms of forums, private messages, shared notes and fully controlled online presence.
	* The Open Media Catalogue is another example of Klango Player's pro-social functions.

Section 11. microBlog - your first web page.

Each time someone creates a new Klango Account, a new webpage is automatically created for it. For example, if "Rambo" is your Klango login name, then your web page address is "http://rambo.klango.net". The page is your personal, simple and easy to use text blog.
MicroBlogs' purpose is to allow you to be present in the World Wide Web in the simplest possible way. Although the engine of microBlogs has yet to be improved in order to incorporate more advanced features, even in the current form is used successfully by many people.

You can create, edit and delete entries of your blog through the "Klango Network" menu of the Player.
What to say more? Just write to your blog and share your web address with your friends. They certainly will follow your entries.

	...and remeber that
	* having an own web page can't be easier than with the Klango. :)

Section 12. Klango Programs - play, learn!

The Klango Player is not only a media player and useful tool for a community. It's also a software platform for developing and publishing unique accessible software solutions.

There are several Klango Programs -- some of them are already available to download, some are still being developed. At the time of writing the set of available programs consists of:

	* a novel educational program "Klango MathTools" with great programmable (social!) calculator and unique audio graphs of functions,
	* two addictive audio games: "Long Jump" (we have an olimpic year after all) and "Dice Poker" and
	* an innovative, prototype interactive multimedia presentation "SoundScape - Zawisza Czarny".

These programs (and generally all Klango Programs) are separate applications with their own readme files, menus, helps and keyboard shortcuts. For more information about the Programs simply install and run them. They should introduce themselves.

Installing a program is a very simple operation: just enter the "Programs" menu, choose "Download program and updates" and select a program to download. The program will be automagically installed and ready to use in seconds -- its name will be added to the list of programs available to run.

Multiple Klango Programs can run simultanously. To switch between them use a menu under the F2 key. Of course one can also use the system Alt-Tab combination for the same purpose, but without the screen-reader it could be difficult for some users.

Some menu items are common for all Klango Programs. Items such "Settings", "Help" and "Exit" are everywhere almost identical as in the Player, but settings done by these items in each of the Programs don't interfere with each other. Not only the settings are stored "per application" but there are also separate pools of Questions and Answers for each Program.
Authors of a particular Klango Program are not necessarily the autors of Klango Player, so the "Message to the Author" form in the "Help" menu is very useful in contacting the right people.
Do you program and have got an idea for a new program? Please read first the section "Creating new Klango Programs".

	Now, let's summarize:
	* Klango Programs are separate applications which may be downloaded and used in seconds due to the Player's install/update machinery available in the "Programs" menu.
	* Klango Programs are created with use of the Player interface elements and functions of the low-level Klango Engine.
	* Multiple Klango Programs can run simultanously. To switch between them use the F2 key.
	* Theme, voice and language settings are separate for each Program.
	* Everybody can develop their own Klango Programs.

Section 13. Known hardware and software issues.

We recieved raports that some models of SoundBlaster LIVE sound cards cause a hard reset of the computer just after launching the Player. This is a strange behavior caused by the sound card driver ONLY in the standard OpenAL mode. The solution is then to start Klango Player with the "DX mode" icon ...and the problems will disapear.

Next known issue is related with Realtek sound cards, mainly with those which are built in to the mother boards. These sound cards don't play the Klango menus correctly. In fact, they don't play well any 3d audio sounds. In such case we suggest lowering the sound card's level of hardware acceleration in the Windows' Control Panel and experimenting with the "standard" and "DX Mode" Klango Player icons.

Section 14. Additional help sources. Q&A mechanism.

The Questions & Aswers mechanism in the "Help" menu is the best way to get to know more about the Player (and Programs). You can read there answers to the most frequently asked questions and, if you wish, you can ask your own question. Your question will be instantly added to the set of questions and will be posted to the forum and to the authors of the program. The authors can "close" your query by answering it. Use this mechanism as often as you wish and remember to read the forum thread generated for your question. Other users don't sleep and they certainly will help you solve any problem.

You can also send a message to the authors of the program using appropriate item of the "Help" menu, but it's rather a one way communication method for expressing your thoughts on the program and for simple bug-reporting. Don't rely on it if you need an answer -- use instead the mechanism described above or the forum if you wish.	As usual, the public forum is a very good place for queries of any kind.

So don't be affraid nor shy, just ask!

	You're not alone in Klango.

...and that's all for the moment. Read the (important) appendices below if you wish. If you don't, then...

	Have fun!
	Spread the word!
	Spread the Klango Player!
	Spread the love and peace.

	APPENDICES
	----------------------------------

Appendix A. Klango Player and older Klango software.

The Klango Player is the successor of earlier Klango productions. Klango 1.35 (released in 2006) was the last program from that line. There are still cool audio games available for that Klango - check them out at http://www.klangogames.com.
The main (and good) information here is that the new Klango Player and older Klango 1.35 software can live on the same computer at the same time without any conflicts.
In the default setting, both programs sit in different folders and create different icons and it's enough to use them without any problems.
Moreover, if Klango Player discover an existence of the older Klango it will insert a new menu item in its "Programs" menu - "Run an older Klango". If you select it, as you probably suppose, Klango Player will minimize itself and the older Klango will launch.
So without any fears you can visit http://www.klangogames.com and download older Klango titles.
By the way: in the near future all these games will be remaked for compatibility with the new Klango Player...

Appendix B. Translating Klango Player into your language.

Yes, it's possible. We took care of such a possibility.
If you could be a sponsor of the translation or if you're ready to do such translation by yourself, please contact us using a form at http://support.klango.net.

Appendix C.	Creating custom audio themes.

The installer software of the Klango Player creates a few subfolders. One of them is the "common" subfolder containing files common to the Player and all Programs. It's the place where you should copy your audio files. To be precise, a path we are interested in is /common/extras/llib/skin, because this folder contains audio themes for the Player.
After Player's setup you'll find there only a one theme, the default one. (Extra themes downloaded with the "Settings" menu are saved in this folder too).
If you duplicate the "default" subfolder under a different name, then you'll get a new theme. It will be instantly available in the "Settings/audio theme" menu. ...Now just substitute audio files in the new subfolder with your own sounds and enjoy your own theme.

Appendix D. Creating new Klango Programs.

We've said previously that Klango Player is also a platform for developing programs. Yes, it is.
A documentation of Klango API is being written at the moment and will be published on our website. It will be free to everyone to create new Programs using the Klango interface elements and functions of the engine behind the Klango Player.
If you are interested, stay tuned.

Appendix E.	(Mobile) Klango Player on a pendrive.

Although this case requires some refinements, there is no problem to have the Player installed on a pendrive. How it can be done? It's simple -- just select the path of your pendrive during the installation process. In such case the installer software won't create any icons and registry entries -- it will just copy all required files to your mobile drive.
When you plug your pendrive into a computer, run the klango.exe program and Klango Player will launch as from regular hard drive.
However, keep in mind that Klango Player doesn't contain any synthesiser and running the Mobile Klango Player (at least in its current version) requires that you will be using it on computers with some voices installed.
Of course, the voice of Microsoft Sam (or Anna) is available almost everywhere.
